Are you one of those people who sneaks to the cabinet when no one is looking, grabs the nutella and eats it by the spoonful? I am slightly embarrassed to admit, I used to be one of those people!
Over time, I started to realize how bad nutella was, not only for my health, but also for our beautiful planet. This is because nutella uses palm oil, and palm oil is cultivated by cutting down rainforests to create palm oil plantations. Destruction of rainforests release carbon dioxide emissions, displace native peoples and compromise the biodiversity of these forests. Orangutans and other species are becoming increasingly endangered from such vast deforestation. Once I learned all of this, I could never look at nutella the same way again. So I stopped buying it.
Fortunately, I recently discovered how to make my own version of nutella, which I prefer to call 'notella' as in 'not nutella' and guess what? I proudly enjoy it by the spoonful because it's made with only 3 real ingredients - no added refined sugar or oils!
Get the recipe and step-by-step instructions below to make your own nutella - it might just change your life!
INGREDIENTS:
2 cups hazelnuts (skin removed)
1 dark chocolate bar (100 g)
1/2 cup coconut sugar
I also encourage you to add a pinch (more like 1/2 tsp) of sea salt :)
DIRECTIONS:
Step 1: Add 2 cups of hazelnuts (skin removed) Step 2: Blend on high until the hazelnuts
to your food processor. release their natural oil and a creamy,
hazelnut butter forms.
Step 3: Meanwhile, melt your dark chocolate. Step 4: Add coconut sugar and salt to
bar. hazelnut butter.
Step 5: Add melted chocolate and blend. Step 6: Transfer to a clean jar of choice
and enjoy while it lasts! Store at room
temperature for at least 2 weeks.
And that is it! See how simple it is? I hope you love this 'notella' as much as I do!
Until next time,
Kimberly
